Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel Review
A Hidden Gem in the Costa Rican Rainforest
Tucked into 80 acres of private rainforest beside Tenorio Volcano National Park, Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel is a boutique, adults-feel escape with something no other hotel in the area can offer: your own stretch of the famous turquoise Río Celeste to swim in.
We stayed one night on our road trip from La Fortuna to Nosara, and it was one of our favorite stays in all of Costa Rica. In this Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel review, we cover the drive in, the rooms, the restaurants, the private river trails, and our honest tips, so you can decide if it belongs on your itinerary.
Arrival
The drive from La Fortuna to Rio Celeste Hideaway takes just under two hours on a smooth, scenic, almost fully paved road — the kind of drive where the windows stay down and the playlist stays on. We left around 9 AM, right after the Mistico Hanging Bridges trail at opening.
We arrived before check-in (3 PM), but the front desk welcomed us with breakfast at the on-site restaurant: tropical fruit, an egg station and Costa Rican coffee. By the time we finished, our casita was ready early, and on the walk down a staff member pointed out a sloth in the treetops.

The Grounds
Rio Celeste Hideaway sits on 80 acres of private rainforest inside the Tapir Natural Reserve, so toucans, sloths and coatis are practically guaranteed. Jungle trails, tropical gardens and quiet lounging spots connect the casitas, and all you hear are birds, frogs and the occasional splash from the pool.
Tip | Keep your eyes up — we spotted a sloth and a toucan just walking from the lobby to our casita.

Dining
The food at Rio Celeste Hideaway was one of the highlights of our stay: generous portions, fresh local ingredients and jungle views at every meal.

Kantala Restaurant | The open-air main restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner (breakfast was included with our stay). Expect gallo pinto, tropical fruit and coatis, agoutis and birds wandering past. Our picks: the loaded chicken quesadilla at lunch and the Kantala beef tenderloin at dinner.
Mandarina Restaurant | Dinner only, 6–10 PM. Asian–Costa Rican fusion in a more refined setting — on our list for next time.
Blue Moon Swim-Up Bar | Light bites, a cold Imperial or a tropical smoothie in the pool. We often had it to ourselves.

Cantina Delirio | A cozy vintage cantina for a pre-dinner cocktail or nightcap, 12–10 PM.
Café Romance | Cappuccinos, Mandarina frappés and tiramisu in the rainforest, 10 AM–6 PM.
Tip | Ask for an window table at breakfast and keep your camera ready — it’s the best wildlife viewing of the day.

Pools, Trails & Rio Celeste
This is the reason to stay. Swimming in the Río Celeste is not allowed inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, but Rio Celeste Hideaway guests get exclusive access to a natural swimming hole on the river.

El Tapir Preserve Trails
Two short trails lead from the hotel to the water: the Armadillo Trail (about 700 m) and the Tapir Trail (about 1.3 km). Both are easy, with a few steep, muddy stretches, and take under 15 minutes.
Swimming in the Río Celeste
The water is shallow and gentle, the turquoise color just as surreal in person, and we had the whole spot to ourselves.
Guided Night Walk
The hotel’s complimentary night walk revealed red-eyed tree frogs, glowing mushrooms and a few surprises we won’t spoil.
Tip | Wear closed-toe shoes on the trails — they get slippery after rain. Swimsuit underneath is fine.

The Room
We stayed in a Garden View Casita with a king bed, one of 26 private casitas spread through the gardens. Expect high-end linens, natural wood, soft lighting, a spacious deck and a modern bathroom with an outdoor shower — cozy, private and made for couples.

Amenities
Beyond your casita, Rio Celeste Hideaway keeps you relaxed and entertained.
Spa | Massages and treatments in the rainforest.
Riverside Yoga Platform | Open-air yoga beside the river, for any level.
Jungle Gym | A modern gym with a rainforest backdrop.
Games Room | Pool, foosball, darts and board games — best with a cocktail.

The Final Review
Rio Celeste Hideaway is worth it. It balances off-the-grid tranquility with upscale comfort: spacious casitas, standout food, breakfast with coatis and, above all, private access to swim in the Río Celeste. If you’re visiting Tenorio Volcano National Park, this is where to stay — just give yourself two nights.
What we loved | Private river access · wildlife everywhere · casitas with outdoor showers · excellent food · free night walk
Good to know | It’s remote, so you’ll drive and eat most meals on-site · trails get muddy after rain

Yes. It is quiet, intimate and surrounded by rainforest, with private bungalows that feel made for two. It is a lovely romantic stop on a Costa Rica itinerary.
