La Fortuna Waterfall

The majestic beauty of La Fortuna Waterfall will have you in awe. It is one of the most popular waterfalls in the country and a must-visit destination. Located in the lush rainforest, this waterfall drops about 70 meters, making it one of the most magnificent waterfalls in Central America. Couples can hike down a 530-step staircase to reach the turquoise pool below, perfect for a refreshing swim deep in the jungle.

Tip | La Fortuna Waterfall gets extremely crowded, so purchasing your ticket online and arriving early is essential to beat the crowds. Tour buses start arriving by 10 AM.

Club Rio Adventure

Club Rio Adventure Center, at The Springs Resort & Spa, offers eight different adventure activities, perfect for all ages and ideal for couples who enjoy a mix of thrill and nature. The convenience of having everything in one location just makes it better. Some of the featured tours and activities include river tubing, inflatable river kayaking, horseback riding, rock climbing and rappelling, nature tours, hot springs, and river fishing.

We had a blast horseback riding across the property and through the river in the early morning. River tubing became one of the highlights of our trip. After picking your adventure, don’t miss the beautiful, secluded hiking trails and natural hot springs.

Tabacon Hot Springs

Tabacon Hot Springs stands out as one of the most enriching things to do in La Fortuna for couples. Nestled in the lush rainforest, it offers a perfect blend of nature and luxury. The hot springs, fed directly by the Arenal Volcano, provide a unique and rejuvenating experience. Having visited twice, we would without a doubt run back time and time again to immerse ourselves in its serene ambiance, indulge in the spa services, and explore the beautiful surroundings.

Beyond exploring over 20 different natural hot springs, our day at Tabacon was spent wandering through lush gardens in search of wildlife. We were thrilled to spot numerous reptiles, as the warm grounds provide an ideal environment for them. For couples looking for a slower, more relaxing experience, Tabacon offers private pools and spa packages that perfectly complement a day of adventure.

Mistico Hanging Bridges

Mistico Hanging Bridges is something out of a storybook. This place had us mesmerized, and we visited twice, even in the rain. Such a cool experience to be in the rainforest and walking above it all. As we walked along the hanging bridges, we were surrounded by breathtaking views of the Arenal Volcano and its lush surroundings. The misty rain only added to the mystical atmosphere and made us feel like we were in a different world.

As you explore the park, you can observe the distinct layers of the rainforest, from the treetops and understory to the forest floor. The tallest bridge stands at an impressive 55 meters high with unbeatable views of the Arenal Volcano. For couples who appreciate nature walks and photography, Mistico is a must-add to your itinerary.

Peñas Blancas Safari Float

Just a quick 25-minute drive from La Fortuna, Río Peñas Blancas offers an amazing tour experience perfect for couples who want a peaceful nature encounter. Instead of noisy motorboats, you’ll be on rafts that let you get closer to the animals without bothering them. With no loud engine, you can fully soak in the jungle sounds — chirping birds, howling monkeys and the flowing river create a serene vibe.

The two-hour boat ride is ideal for a half-day morning adventure, leaving plenty of time for more fun later. You can choose between a morning or afternoon tour. On the tour, you might spot monkeys, caimans, iguanas, crocodiles, sloths, and tons of bird species. Each safari float is unique, offering couples a shared intimate connection with Costa Rica’s wildlife.

Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most famous volcanoes and a magical place to visit. Couples can explore the area by hiking, horseback riding, or crossing hanging bridges. There are three main spots for hiking near Arenal Volcano: Arenal Volcano National Park, Arenal 1968 Private Reserve, and the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Trails.

We’ve tried all three, and the Arenal Observatory Lodge is one of our favorite hotels in La Fortuna, with rooms boasting stunning volcano views ideal for waking up to the jungle. For hikes, Arenal Volcano National Park offers easier trails with breathtaking views, perfect for couples of all fitness levels. For those seeking a challenge, the Arenal 1968 hike is tougher.

Just a heads-up: weather can obscure views of the 5,358-foot-high volcano, but La Fortuna’s charm shines rain or shine with plenty to do.

Rio Celeste & Tenorio

Tenorio Volcano National Park, one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, is a hiker’s paradise about 1.5 hours from La Fortuna. Known for the stunning Río Celeste with its mesmerizing blue waters caused by volcanic activity, it offers various trails through lush rainforest, bubbling hot springs, and cascading waterfalls.

Tenorio is home to wildlife like howler monkeys, tapirs, and many bird species. Guided tours are available for those who want to learn more about the ecosystem, or you can explore independently.

Tip | If your itinerary allows, consider staying overnight in Bijagua so you can enjoy the park early in the morning and beat the crowds. One of our favorite hotels, Rio Celeste Hideaway Hotel, is located there.

Ziplining

While we did ziplining in Monteverde due to a packed La Fortuna schedule, Sky Adventures offers incredible ziplining with breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano and the lake. Their professional and friendly staff ensure safety and fun, offering packages ranging from thrilling zipline courses to peaceful aerial tram rides through the rainforest.
