What Is Tabacon?

Tabacón is one of the most famous luxury hot spring resorts in La Fortuna — and easily one of our favorite things to do in La Fortuna. The thermal waters come directly from the Arenal Volcano. They’re completely natural and mineral-rich, flowing through pools that blend into the surrounding rainforest.

Unlike many other hot springs parks, Tabacon focuses on preserving the natural environment while offering high-end amenities. It’s a favorite with wellness travelers and anyone who likes their adventure with a side of luxury.

These days Tabacón offers one day pass, and the only choice is whether to add lunch or dinner. Prices change by season and passes are limited, so reserve in advance — they sell out quickly. We recommend booking as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.

Prices are per adult. The experience here is truly unique — a perfect blend of luxury, nature and tranquility, and the pricing reflects that. Tip | If you decide to skip the culinary experience, they allow re-entry the day of your visit. So you can grab a bite somewhere nearby and come back.

Getting There

Tabacon Hot Springs is about 15 minutes west of La Fortuna town, making it easily accessible whether you’re staying nearby or exploring the region.

By Car | If you want the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is the way to go. There’s ample parking at the resort.

Shuttle or Taxi | The quickest and most comfortable option. Most hotels in La Fortuna offer shuttle services, or taxis can be hailed easily from town. Expect a 10–15 minute drive along well-maintained roads.

Tip | Make it a full adventure day: hit Mistico Hanging Bridges at 7 AM, then soak at Tabacón all afternoon.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Tabacon is ANYTIME. There’s truly no bad time — we’ve experienced both rain and sunshine here, and each visit was unique and amazing in its own way.

The hot springs open at 10 AM and close at 10 PM. We recommend arriving early, especially during peak season, to enjoy the calm before the crowds arrive. Late afternoons and evenings bring a magical ambiance as the pools light up softly under the stars.

Tip | Take your time and explore the gardens. Many visitors focus solely on the hot springs and miss the animals hidden in the greenery.

Our Experience

From the moment we arrived, the resort felt like a jungle sanctuary. Paths wind alongside warm rivers and tropical plants. We spent hours moving between pools, each one with a different temperature and mood.

The warm water, heated by the volcano, relaxed both our bodies and minds. What impressed us most was the blend of wild nature and thoughtful luxury. Despite being popular, the layout gives you plenty of private, quiet corners to escape the crowds.

Beyond exploring over 20 natural hot springs, we went wandering through the gardens in search of wildlife — and spotted numerous reptiles, since the warm grounds are the perfect environment for them. Showers and changing rooms made it easy to freshen up after soaking.

When it was time to cool off, we headed to the Agua Ardiente pool bar for fresh coconuts — the best way to hydrate between soaks. We also ordered the Mango & Coconut ceviche ($21): seabass, mango, cilantro, red onion and red pepper in a coconut leche de tigre, served with chips. It was AMAZING.
